Meet the Board: Sarah Wingo, Legislative Liaison

Sarah Wingo, Librarian

Subject specialist for English Literature, Theatre, and Romance Languages and Literature

Villanova University

Falvey Memorial Library

What are your research interests? – I earned an MA in English before pursuing my library degree and my particular area of specialty is as an early modernist (Shakespeare and other early modern playwrights).

What do you enjoy most about your job? – Working with faculty and students, I especially love working with the English and Theatre graduate students, they always have interesting research questions and I really enjoy being able to help them explore resources they were unaware of as well as brainstorming directions for them to take their research.

What are some of your personal hobbies or interests? – Beyond reading which I feel is a given for librarians, I have been going to yoga 3 times a week for almost 3 years now, and I love hiking and being outdoors.

I’m a pop culture junkie and enjoy talking about film and television just as much as I enjoy conversations about books.

I’m also an avid consumer of the arts and love going to the theatre and ballet.

I like to travel and I love trying the food local to the places I go whether in the US or internationally.

Although I haven’t acted myself in a long time the dramatic side of me loves creating elaborate costumes for Halloween or any other event involving costumes.

An additional statement from Sarah – I grew up in South East Michigan, I lived in the UK where I did my masters in English, and I moved to Philadelphia in 2013 when I joined Villanova’s Falvey Memorial Library.

Meet the Board: Elise Ferer, Director at Large

Elise Ferer, Librarian for Undergraduate Learning

Drexel University
Hagerty Library
ACRL DVC Board Member Role: Director at Large

What are your research interests? – Some of my research interests include how students apply information literacy skills in the workplace after college or to work experience that is part of their college experience. Because I work a lot with first year students and first year writing courses I am always interested in learning how to improve information literacy instruction in first year courses or within general education or core curriculum.

What do you enjoy most about your job? – I enjoy meeting students and learning about their interests and what they are studying. Especially at a large institution like Drexel it becomes easy to lump students into one group to describe them or to only see their faults or bad behavior, so connecting with them one on one helps me remember that they are all unique people. Also, usually our students are doing interesting work or have personal motivation that fuels their studies.

What are some of your personal hobbies or interests? – In my free time I enjoy exploring Philadelphia, doing yoga, and traveling when I can.

An additional statement from Elise – I have been asked to help plan a few social events this year for ACRL DVC and I am looking for volunteers to help me. If you’re interested let me know! (etf25@drexel.edu).

Meet the Board: Jessica Brangiel, ACRL DVC Secretary

Editor’s Note: This year, we will be posting a new series called “Meet the Board”. This series will introduce the board members to the ACRL DVC community. Thanks to Jessica Brangiel for kicking off this series!

Jessica Brangiel, Electronic Resources Management Librarian

Swathmore College

McCabe Library

ACRL Board Member Role: Secretary

What are your research interests? – There are so many interesting areas of the library profession.   Over the past few years I’ve become very involved in work and research around accessibility and specifically accessible course materials.

What do you enjoy most about your job? – No day is the same in my job.   That makes it both exciting and at times exhausting but never dull!

What are some of your personal hobbies or interests? – I’m a big reader and love to cook though I’m happy to let some else do the cleanup.

An additional statement from Jessica – I have really enjoyed getting to know my colleagues through ACRL DVC. It is a great group of people and I encourage anyone who is interested in getting involved to reach out. There is always room for participation at any level.

Greetings from the President

Wishing all members a great start to another academic year!

The 2017-18 chapter officers  met over the summer to discuss goals and initiatives for the year. In addition to continuing the successful programs already established, we plan to offer new networking and educational opportunities and hope to hear from membership about the types of programs that would be most valuable.

I would like to take an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of the 2016-2017 Board under the leadership of Martha Stevenson.

Student Stipend
In November, the Chapter awarded Alexandra Wilder a $1,000 stipend in support of her MLIS studies at Drexel University.

Fall Program
Also in November, the chapter hosted the program, CritLib:Theory and Action at Swarthmore College with presentations  on the intersections of identity, social justice, and professional practice.

ACRL DVC Student Scholarship
Julianna Pakstis
In April, the Chapter awarded MLIS student Julianna Pakstis a scholarship to attend the ACRL annual conference in Baltimore. Read her conference report.

Leaders Reception at ACRL Annual Conference
For the first time, the Chapter collaborated with the Maryland Chapter of the ACRL to host a leadership reception at the annual conference. The event was a success thanks to the generous donations of 26 organizations and individuals.

I would also like to recognize the chapter officers who completed their time on the board this past May: Cathy Ogur, University of Pennsylvania;  Anne Schwelm, Cabrini College; Pamela Harris, Swarthmore College; Christina McCawley, West Chester University; and Kristyna Carroll.

What Can You Do Now?

We have a terrific fall program planned and will be posting information soon, so be on the lookout. In the meantime, please take a moment to join or renew your chapter membership  and consider participating in our Mentor Program

If you have ideas you wish to share or are interested in becoming more involved in the organization, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
